It looked like Apple TV had found its next sleeper hit in The Last Frontier, the wintry crime thriller series headlined by Jason Clarke, until last week. News broke over the weekend that Apple TV had canceled The Last Frontier after only one season, and it’s yet to be announced if it’s being shopped to find a new home. The series follows a U.S. Marshal who is forced to round up the survivors of a plane crash that was carrying violent inmates. Despite being dealt the axe, The Last Frontier has surged into the #2 spot on Apple TV, behind only Pluribus.

In addition to Jason Clarke in the role of Frank Remnick, The Last Frontier also stars Dominic Cooper and Haley Bennett. The show was written and created for TV by Jon Bokenkamp and Richard D’Ovidio, with Ryan Cruise, Melissa Glen, Albert Kim, Akela Cooper, Kelli Johnson, and Glenn Kessler all working in the writers’ room. Clarke also earned a producing credit for his work on The Last Frontier, and Extraction director Sam Hargrave helmed two episodes of the 10-episode series. The show drew comparisons to Taylor Sheridan‘s Yellowstone, though it’s more like Prison Break.

Jason Clarke is best known for his role as Dan in Zero Dark Thirty, the 2012 political thriller from Kathryn Bigelow. Clarke reunited with Bigelow not long ago for A House of Dynamite, another gripping political thriller starring Rebeca Ferguson and Idris Elba. Clarke recently teamed up with Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer, his 2023 courtroom drama led by Cillian Murphy, but Clarke does not have a role in Nolan’s next film, The Odyssey.

What Else Is Streaming on Apple TV Right Now?

Pluribus and The Last Frontier are the two most popular shows on Apple TV. Other shows, such as Slow Horses and Ted Lasso, are also firmly in the Apple TV top 10, with sci-fi masterpieces such as Invasion and Severance set to exit the top 10 in the coming days. Brad Pitt’s blockbuster racing film F1 has set the Apple TV streaming charts ablaze after its premiere, even taking the crown from Mark Wahlberg’s Family Plan 2. Still, both The Family Plan and The Family Plan 2 are hanging around behind F1, and Guy Ritchie’s Fountain of Youth is following behind at #4.
