ITV Coronation Street sparks fears for legendary character after hospital dash
A Coronation Street fan-favourite could be set to leave the cobbles after she was rushed to hospital following a horror fall in Monday’s episode
It appears an unexpected departure could be on the cards for one legendary Coronation Street character.
During Monday’s episode of the ITV programme, viewers witnessed several Weatherfield locals attending the speed dating evening at The Rovers.
However, Glenda Shuttleworth (Jodie Prenger) discloses she plans to manipulate the proceedings so that Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews) can have her first date with George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley).
But before the romantic encounters can properly commence, Jenny’s mobile keeps buzzing, displaying Rita Tanner’s (Barbara Knox) name on the caller ID. After declining the calls several times, Jenny eventually chooses to pick up, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Hurrying to the assembled group, Jenny announces she must dash off as Rita has taken a tumble. At the corner shop, Rita appeared fine as she chatted with Jenny, who admitted her existence wasn’t turning out as she’d envisioned.
Rita reassured her: “You know Jenny, I’ll always look after you.”
Jenny responded: “Yeah but I should be the one looking after you!”
As Rita suggested they could care for each other, they made their way upstairs for a brew, though it appeared her accident was more severe than initially believed.
Later in the programme, Jenny was spotted in floods of tears before George arrived bearing flowers for Rita. When asked about the situation, she revealed: “We’re not long back from the hospital. She thought that she had just hurt her ankle. She wasn’t expecting a scan or for the results to be so bad.”
At first, George inquired about the scan results but then decided it was Rita’s place to disclose them.
He shared with Jenny his hope that Rita’s situation wasn’t as severe as someone he knew who discovered they had stage four bowel cancer after going to A&E with a broken leg.
Jenny reassured him: “No, it’s not as bad as that.”
He responded: “It must be pretty bad, I can see you’ve been crying. I know how much you love her. It must be hitting you pretty hard.”
