Coronation Street star Amy Cudden reveals Becky’s secret tactic to win over Lisa

It takes some nerve to waltz into Weatherfield and crack jokes a mere four years on from the faking of your own death. But that’s Coronation Street‘s Becky Swain for you – an uncompromising individual who will always push to get what she wants.

Since Becky’s shock arrival in Weatherfield earlier this month, Inside Soap has been watching her every move, so we couldn’t be more delighted to sit down with actor Amy Cudden as she exclusively spills the tea on her character’s growing desperation.

“Becky’s sense of humour is one of her tactics,” Amy reveals. “She’s a very slippery character. If you were trying to give her an archetype, she’s a shapeshifter. She plays the room that she’s in.

She knows that she can make Lisa laugh, and she knows that she can make Betsy laugh. If she’s looking to become closer to them, one of the easiest ways is to make them laugh and to soften them that way.”

When it comes to Betsy, Becky genuinely cares for her daughter as evidenced by her eagerness to see the teenager when she first arrived in Weatherfield. It’s clear, however, that she has plenty of work to do if she’s going to redeem herself as a mother.

“Becky adores her daughter,” reflects Amy. “But she’s got a real issue with boundaries. She sees herself as maybe more like Betsy’s best mate, which isn’t very healthy. She’s not going to be the one to lay down the law to really rein things in.”

“She’d be the one to suggest something really naughty and silly to do, [which would] possibly get Betsy in trouble with Lisa. She’s the fun and slightly wild mum,” continued the actor.

Given her trauma over the last year, trouble is the last thing that Betsy needs, and the same goes for both Carla and Lisa. But is it inevitable that Becky will stick around and continue to be a thorn in the Connor-Swains side?

“I can’t see how she wouldn’t,” Amy teases. “Just her presence and the fact that she’s alive. Betsy is her daughter as much as she is Lisa’s, so that dynamic would always be something they’d have to work out.

“Bearing in mind how much Becky depends on that relationship, or those two relationships, it’s not going to be smooth sailing…”
