Hollyoaks star hints at joining EastEnders after ‘unexpected’ exit from Channel 4 soap

Sherrie Hewson is eager to secure a part on EastEnders following her character’s brutal demise on Hollyoaks earlier this week.

The Loose Women favourite, 75, portrayed Martha Blake in the Channel 4 drama for 17 months before the character suffered a gruesome fate at the hands of her serial killer son Jez Blake (Jeremy Sheffield).

Discussing her concluding scenes, which were broadcast last week, Sherrie commented: “It was quite spectacular, unexpected and it was horrific more than anything else.”

Sherrie formerly portrayed Maureen Holdsworth in Coronation Street from 1993 until 1997 and again in 2006 and Lesley Meredith in Emmerdale from 2004 until 2006.

Discussing the prospect of appearing in Albert Square, Sherrie told Reach PLC: “I’m not sure who I’d play but they can write anything can’t they.

“My mate Harriet Thorpe is in that, she plays Elaine [Peacock] who I love, so I’d love to go in as her sister or an evil something or other and be really horrible to her.

“I’d love to do that with Harriet because we’re really good friends, that would be something I’d like to do.”

This follows Sherrie revealing that she believes older television audiences are being treated like “coffin dodgers” and more mature actors and actresses need to be represented on screen.

She expressed: “Today’s TV so often chases the young and forgets the rest but for many of us, the joy of great television has always been simple – you just watch a show and you laugh, or you don’t. Funny is funny.

“Look at the adverts on television, you never see older people in adverts unless they’re in a funeral parlour or a cremation or life insurance. It’s like we’re being treated like coffin dodgers or something.”

In addition to her roles in some of Britain’s most popular soaps, Sherrie also portrayed Joyce Temple Savage in Benidorm and was a regular panellist on Loose Women.
