Becky Swain (Amy Cudden), long believed to be dead and gone, recently turned up in Coronation Street, landing an epic bombshell on ex wife DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers), daughter Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) and Lisa’s new fiancée Carla Connor (Alison King) by revealing that she was actually alive and well.

Lisa was absolutely floored by the revelation, having spent the previous four years grieving the loss of her wife alongside their daughter, Betsy.

Becky explained her disappearance by revealing that she’d been working undercover in a criminal gang, aiming to bring them down from the inside. When she was discovered, and with both her and her families lives in grave danger, she faked her death and headed to Spain to hide.

Lisa was furious, firstly for Becky putting their lives at risk and secondly for not considering another way that didn’t involve her pretending to be dead, thereby avoiding putting both Lisa and Betsy through utter hell.

While Lisa initially decided Betsy wasn’t to learn the truth, the decision was taken out of her hands when an encounter between Betsy and Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) lead Becky to reveal herself.

With Becky now back in the fold, things are tense between her and Carla, who’s naturally unsettled by the re-emergence of her current fiancée’s ex wife.

She initially formed an alliance with Kit Green (Jacob Roberts), though shady DI Costello (Daon Broni) put an end to their meddling by seducing Kit with the promise of a promotion.

It was, in fact, Costello who conspired with Becky over her disappearance, when he identified the victim of a body as her so she could leave the country. Upon her reappearance, Costello is utterly rattled and wants her gone from Weatherfield.

With Carla away in Ireland next week after some initial concerns about leaving Lisa alone with her ex-wife, we asked the actor behind Becky, Amy Cudden if Carla’s right to be threatened: ‘If you combine the habit of Lisa loving Becky, because that’s a habit that’s still in her, with Becky being absolutely obsessed and driven to be with her family, it’s like a primal life drive for her, she has to be with them, yeah, it’s a threat, but if you look at the person that’s being threatened – we’re talking about Carla Connor! They don’t come tougher.

So, what that means is that we get this really, really fun tension between two very determined women fighting over the same love.

So, yeah, I think she’s a threat, but that threat is coming at a woman who is extremely resilient and extremely tough.’

Things begin to thaw between Lisa and Becky when Betsy persuades them to model some of her designs for a college project. As the three re-bond, Betsy captures the moment with a recording and uploads it to social media. Becky flips her lid about the possibility of people discovering that she’s back.

‘One of Becky’s strategies to soften Lisa and to ingratiate herself back into her family is to make them laugh. To clown for them and make them giggle, and to bring the lightness and the playfulness to the relationship. And it’s born out of that, they all let their guards down, they all have a really good laugh together, and Betsy innocently takes a video.

‘It does put Becky in a certain amount of danger, but I also think that Becky isn’t above slightly manipulating her daughter into thinking that maybe she’s made a bigger problem than she actually has.

‘I don’t think it’s great that Becky’s image is out there, it compromises her, but it’s also weirdly useful for her to be able to play on Betsy and Lisa’s guilt a bit. Her default action is to manipulate people; she plays the room that she’s in.

‘And if there is a sense that people are feeling guilty for having dropped her in it then, no doubt, she is going to, some extent, take advantage of that,’ Amy said on the incident.

It’s made worse when Costello calls her and tells her she needs to leave immediately. Becky tells him to back off, but it’s clear she’s rattled.

Things intensify when Costello has Betsy arrested for damaging a police car, resisting arrest and assaulting an officer.

‘She’s obviously concerned; she doesn’t want her daughter to be in trouble. But I think, also, Becky’s been living outside of the law for four years now, she’s been away in Alicante, I don’t think she is troubled by what she might have to do to help her daughter out.

So, I think, in a way, I’d say Lisa is very rules oriented, Becky less so. Becky’s immediate go-to is, ‘What can I do to get my daughter out of this situation?’

‘And knowing that she’ll probably be able to do something. She’s genuinely concerned about what her daughter is going through emotionally, but she knows that she’ll be able to do something about it,’ Amy said on her alter-ego’s thoughts on Betsy’s predicament.

When she confronts him he makes things crystal clear: go back to Spain or he’ll make things even worse for Betsy. ‘There is a small, quiet voice in Becky’s head that’s saying, ‘Do you know what? You might have to step away, you might have to go and leave your family to get on without you,’ but I think Becky’s working really, really hard to ignore that voice.

‘I think she thinks, ‘Yeah, okay, I might be getting them in a bit of danger, but I can also fix it.’ She’s got this absolute grandiose complex, ‘Yep, whatever trouble I cause, I can definitely get us out of it. I can fix everything because they’re my family,’ Amy said of Becky’s thoughts on Costello’s threat.

Will Becky disappear again for the sake of her daughter? And if she doesn’t, what is DI Costello truly capable of? Either way, it sounds as though trouble is brewing.
