Coronation Street fans are starting to fear for Carla Connor as they try and work out DI Costello’s ‘role’ in Becky Swain’s fake death.
Those who follow the ITV soap know that the detective inspector has been acting suspicious when it comes to Lisa Swain’s interest in her late wife’s demise.
Fans first heard about Becky last year when the detective sergeant opened up to her new partner, Carla Connor, about her late wife as the pressures of being a detective sergeant on the Lauren Bolton and Joel Deering case and being a mum to teenage daughter, Betsy, got on top of her.
Since then, Corrie viewers have watched Lisa and Carla fall for one another and after moving into their first home together, No.6 Coronation Street, earlier this year, the pair recently got engaged.
But it’d be fair to say that fans have been distracted by Costello, and his keenness to keep the truth about Becky’s demise from Lisa – as well as her colleague, DC Kit Green, who has also been doing some digging into the Becky saga.
This was only ramped up even further when, at the end of last week, Lisa and her new fiancée came face-to-face with who they thought was Tia Wardley, months after Carla was given the name as a clue by Logan Radcliffe in her search for information about Becky’s death.
But in the scenes that followed, Tia was seen getting in DI Costello’s car and telling him to “cough up”, with it now obvious he had paid her to pretend to be Tia Wardley. “I gave them the full Meryl Streep,” she said. “Really milked it. Looked like the blonde one was going to cry.”
It was then during Monday’s (September 8) episode of Corrie that Becky made her shock return, proving she was never dead at all, leaving Lisa speechless.
With the usual mid-week episode of Corrie pulled from the schedule due to the National Television Awards 2025 broadcasting live on ITV, Corrie fans had to wait until Friday (September 12) to find out what happened next.
Lisa struggled to believe Becky was standing in front of her, and was unable to get her head around the fact that Becky had allowed her and their daughter, Betsy, to grieve her for so long despite her whole death being fake.
Becky explained that she had spent the last four years in Spain under another name after being put into witness protection, following an undercover operation gone wrong.

Lisa was furious to discover that Becky had been targeting a dangerous gang, which had ultimately put the whole family in danger and led to Becky’s decision to go into hiding.
Carla then returned home from the false alarm at the factory and while Becky tried to claim she knew Lisa from work, she wasn’t having any of it and clearly distressed, told her new partner the truth.
Needing some space, Lisa left Carla at the house with Becky, before Roy Cropper arrived and tried to tell Carla he definitely saw Becky during his recent visit to the hospital, as he saw a photo of her in their home.
Carla managed to get out of the situation before Carla and Becky went in search of Lisa. They eventually tracked her down in the park she and Becky used to take Betsy to as a child, and found her sitting on Becky’s memorial bench.
It was revealed then that the ashes Lisa scattered all those years ago were of Tia Wardley, the name Logan Radcliffe had given Carla during a prison visit, and the name of the woman they thought had interupted their recent engagement celebrations.
During the scenes, it was also confirmed that it was the real Tia Wardley who died, and that it was Costello who helped to ‘identify’ Becky’s body, meaning Lisa never actually saw that she was deceased.

And now Corrie fans are trying to figure out more about Costello’s role in the Becky saga, and have shared their fears for Carla as she is set to be warned by DC Kit Green about digging into the his and Lisa’s boss.
@swarlahq said: “Current theory: Costello orchestrated Becky’s supposed ‘killing’ as a way to derail the corruption investigation. He knew that if investigators pushed too hard at Becky, his whole house of cards would collapse and he’d be dragged down right along with her.”

@DarkRebel1129 commented: “I think if carla get close to knowing what actually happened about everything I think becky/Costello are going to try to hurt/kill carla.” @_AIison_ asked: “‘You’re telling me half truths and I’m not buying it’. So were Becky and Costello actually involved with the gang rather than Becky being undercover? #Swarla #Corrie.”
@louise_trowse shared: “If she was in witness protection then why is Costello worried about them both going to prison, doesn’t make sense #swarla.” But @xHollyWakefield added: “Why do I have a feeling Carla and kit will work together to dig into Becky/costello and eventually bring them both down.”
