Liam gets crushing news after murders in Emmerdale – and things get worse for him

Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) recently learnt another staff member at the surgery in Emmerdale had been putting multiple lives in danger.

Seriously, who hires these people?!

Following the showdown at the gorge, John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) and Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) were rushed into hospital. John’s injuries left him with a few broken ribs, while Aaron’s saw him placed in a coma.

While Aaron was unconscious, John worked hard to try and convince those around him that Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) was responsible for pushing the couple from the cliff face.

As soon as Aaron woke up though, he revealed the truth – John had killed Nate, was holding Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) hostage, and had also orchestrated a number of deadly events that had taken place in the village this year.

As part of John’s hero complex, he would deliberately put someone in danger so he could swoop in and save them. A former army medic, John had no hesitations in administering the correct medicine to help the victim – but of course he needed to get the drugs from somewhere.

In the aftermath of the discovery about John, the CQC launched an investigation into Brooke Cottage Surgery. An audit was conducted and in tonight’s episode, Manpreet Sharma (Rebecca Sarker) confirmed to Liam that the CQC has found proof John was using medication from the surgery on his victims.

It means the reputation of the practice will be badly impacted. It was terrible news, and only added to Liam’s growing list of problems.

While at the surgery, Liam once again had difficulty controlling his bladder. He was found by Manpreet, who wondered what on earth was going on.

The doctor became the patient and Liam explained to Manpreet that he had been caught short a number of times, and was also getting up in the night quite frequently to go to the toilet.

Liam revealed his family has history with prostate cancer as well. Given Liam is a doctor and offers advice to patients everyday, ignoring his symptoms left Manpreet surprised.

A while later, Liam returned home and explained to Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) that he needs to have a few tests. Following her own cancer diagnosis, Chas couldn’t hide her worry.

How will Liam get on?

‘The moment he concedes defeat and admits he’s got a problem, I think he sees it as a mark of weakness, almost’, star Jonny McPherson said.

‘There’s that playing into it, also he has a very busy life and I think he always wants to kick the can down the road – do it tomorrow, do it tomorrow.

‘Without going into sweeping generalisations I think it is a predominantly male tendency, in the same vein as not wanting to show weakness, is not wanting to admit you’ve got a problem and just hope that it all goes away.’

He added: ‘I think it’s one of the main reasons that soap is successful and it’s so particular to the genre of continuing drama that people that watch it get familiar with the characters over many, many years.

‘They watch them go through the everyday diagnoses, difficulties, deaths, marriage – all of these things they can relate to in a way that other genres don’t necessarily afford.

‘If someone’s watching the programme and has similar concerns and thinks, “I really should get that sorted,” then it’s a job well done.’
