Created by William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell, the CBS soap opera originally produced half-hour installments before expanding to hour-long episodes in 1980. While initially focused on the Brooks and the Fosters, the creators later shifted focus to new core families, including the wealthy Abbotts, the down-to-earth Williamses, and the powerful Newmans.

Y&R has won 11 Daytime Emmy Awards for Best Drama Series, the second-most ever behind General Hospital at 17. It has maintained its position as the highest-rated daytime drama on American television for 34 consecutive years. Major stars even used The Young and the Restless as a launching pad for their careers, including Eva LongoriaDavid Hasselhoff, and Tom Selleck.
