This article contains spoilers for tonight’s Coronation Street, which has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on ITVX.

Not one but two major relationships came crashing down in tonight’s instalment of Coronation Street as the truth about Carl and Abi Webster’s (Jonathan Howard and Sally Carman) affair was finally exposed.

From the moment she first set eyes on her brother-in-law, Abi tried to fight her growing feelings for him.

However, after learning that husband Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) had lied about needing further cancer treatment, Abi gave in and the pair began a steamy affair.

In recent weeks, Abi realised that she had fallen out of love with Kevin, and trying to keep up the façade was too much.

After weeks of pretending, Abi finally told Kevin that she wanted a divorce, leaving him absolutely devastated.

Since then, they have been amicably co-parenting, with Kevin completely oblivious to Abi’s relationship with his brother.

Unfortunately, this was never going to last.

In recent scenes, Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) found out about Abi and Carl, putting even more pressure on the couple to come clean.

Tonight, they were all shoved further into the pressure cooker as the day of Ronnie Bailey’s (Vinta Morgan) birthday arrived.

With Debbie, Carl, Abi and Kevin around one table in the Bistro, things were bound to be explosive.

Add in the appearance of James Bailey (Jason Callender), and you have the perfect recipe for disaster!

Viewers will know that, while Abi was cheating on Kevin with Carl, Carl was cheating on Abi with James!

Midway through the dinner, with tensions already simmering, things took a sudden downward spiral when Abi made the ultimate faux pas – sending the wrong text to the wrong person.

Throughout the meal, Debbie had been cosying up to Kevin, trying to get him to contact a lawyer in order to ensure that the divorce went smoothly.

With Debbie seemingly getting closer to dropping the bombshell, Abi text Carl to warn him that Kevin might know about them.

Only it wasn’t Carl who received the text…

Abi realised her mistake almost immediately and ordered Carl outside, warning him of her mix-up and asking him to help her fix it.

Together, they came up with a plan to get into Kevin’s phone and delete the text – all of which went smoothly, leaving them believing they were off the hook.

What they didn’t bargain for was Kevin getting his hands on Alfie’s tablet, which also contained Kevin’s text messages.

As the rest of the family sang happy birthday to Ronnie, Kevin read the text, and all hell broke loose.

Cake went flying, there was shouting and screaming, and the truth was finally out.

While Kevin’s world fell apart, James faced the shock of realising that he had been Carl’s bit on the side, and he made it clear that whatever was going on between them was now firmly over.

Unexpectedly, Kevin was prepared to be more forgiving, insisting that he and Abi could get past this.

Abi spelt out that their marriage was over, and soon she was moving into Carl’s hotel room with son Alfie.

With things officially over between Abi and Kevin, and Carl and James, will Carl and Abi’s relationship go the distance? Or will they come to regret coming clean?
