‘Yellowstone’ Fans, Here’s the Right Way to Watch the Series and Its Spinoffs
Yellowstone gave viewers five seasons of Dutton family drama, rugged ranch life, and sweeping Montana views—but for fans, it still wasn’t enough. So showrunner Taylor Sheridan expanded the universe with two prequels and a spinoff (or two), and the franchise continues to grow. Several new series are already in the works, while existing ones have been renewed for additional seasons. So while Yellowstone may have ended in 2024, its legacy—and many fan-favorite cast members—live on.
If you’re curious about how to watch Yellowstone in order, it’s actually pretty intuitive. Here’s what we recommend.
‘1883’ (2021-2022)
Coined as the Dutton family origin story, 1883 follows James Dutton (Tim McGraw), the original patriarch of the family, as he ventures to Montana in the 1800s to establish the Yellowstone Ranch.
This is a 10-episode miniseries, created in 2021 as a prequel to Yellowstone. It’s available to stream on Paramount+. Notable cast members include Sam Elliott and Faith Hill, alongside Tim McGraw.

‘1923’ (2022-2025)
Centered around the next generation of Duttons, 1923 shows how the family navigates the rise of western expansion, prohibition, and the Great Depression on the ranch.
This two-season prequel, created in 2022, takes place after 1883 but before Yellowstone. It’s available to stream on Paramount+. Notable cast members include Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, and Jerome Flynn.

‘Yellowstone’ (2018-2024)
Set in the present day, the Dutton Family owns the largest ranch in the United States, nestled in a remote part of Montana. The show follows patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and other family members as outsiders vie for their land.
The five-season series finished airing in 2024 and is now available to stream on Peacock.

‘Marshals’ (2026-Present)
Formerly titled Y: Marshals, this spinoff series follows Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), the youngest son of John Dutton, as he leaves the ranch to serve as a U.S. Marshal while continuing to navigate his complicated family ties.
The series is currently airing its first season on CBS and Paramount+, with new episodes released every Sunday, and has already been renewed for a second season. Chronologically, the story takes place after the events of Yellowstone.

‘The Madison’ (2026-Present)
Originally titled 2024 when it was first pitched, The Madison follows the Clyburn family as they relocate from New York City to rural Montana. The second half of season one is set to premiere on March 21, 2026, on Paramount+. Meanwhile, a second season has already been greenlit and filmed.
Created by Yellowstone showrunner Taylor Sheridan, there is an ongoing debate about whether the series exists within the Yellowstone universe or stands on its own. If it is considered a spinoff, it’s best viewed after Yellowstone.

Spinoff Series to Come
The Yellowstone universe doesn’t stop with two prequels and two spinoffs. In fact, the franchise has three more confirmed series on the docket, one of which potentially includes Matthew McConaughey.
- 1944 (2026) — Following suit with the other date-specific prequels, 1944 is expected to follow the Dutton family during the era of World War II. Cast members have not been announced, though Matthew McConaughey is rumored to be involved. The TV series is expected to premiere in late 2026, with the storyline falling between 1923 and Yellowstone in chronology.
- Dutton Ranch (TBD) — Dutton Ranch follows Beth Dutton, her husband Rip Wheeler, and their ward, Carter, as they grow their own legacy in the ranching world of South Texas. The show is said to pick up where the original series left off. An air date has not yet been announced, but it will appear exclusively on Paramount+.
- 6666 (TBD) — Pronounced “Four Sixes,” this series is anticipated to follow Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White), a former Yellowstone ranch hand who was sent to 6666 to learn how to become a cowboy. While greenlit, the series has yet to announce a premiere date. It would follow Yellowstone in chronological order.
